A Primordial Crown nemrég jelent meg, és ahogy látom, a banda lényeges változásokon esett át a közelmúltban. De először, kérlek mutatkozzatok be!
Mi vagyunk az URSA, egy ötfős progresszív metal banda Belgiumból. Niels a doboknál, Staf a basszosunk, Luciano és én - Alex - gitárokon, és Jan az énekesünk.
Hogy definiálnátok az URSA zenéjét?
Alex: dinamikus progmetálként definiálnám, ami időt szán arra, hogy kibontsa, megfesse a hangképét. Mindnyájunk különböző zenei ízléssel, és inspirációkkal jön, a modern, és precíz vonaltól a nyers, természetes dolgokon át. Megpróbálunk olyan dolgot kreálni, ami remélhetően egyedi lesz.

Mióta él a zenekar, és mikor alakult ki az új felállás?
Alex: Staffal és Niels-szel volt egy bandánk, a Horses Blew Fire (HBF). Ott énekes voltam, és 2018. körül kiszálltam, hogy a saját projektembe kezdjek. Később Staf is kilépett, és csatlakozott hozzám. Sok névváltáson, és stílus beli változáson is átmentünk, valami olyasmit akartunk csinálni, mint az Agent Fresno és The Intersphere. Viszont akkori dobosunk, Jesse sokkal kaotikusabb témákat hozott, így súlyosabb, és hangszerközpontúbbá vált a dolog. Később mindne megváltozott, és amikor Luciano belépett, elkezdett kialakulni a mostani hangzásvilágunk. Régi dobosunk kilépett, és Niels-szel folytattuk 2021-től. Ekkor gyorsult fel minden, a dalok nagyrészét ekkor fejeztük be. Végül, Jan csatlakozott hozzánk 2024-ben. A Primordial Crown egy új kezdetet jelöl a banda életében, itt már hallhatjátok Jan vokáljait is.

Mik, és kik az inspirációitok?
Alex: sokmindneből inspirálódom, ez mindig változik, a Karnivooltól a Car Bombon át, a Spiritboxtól Tigran Hamasyanig, és sok popzenéből is. Mindig próbálok nyitott elmével, felfedező módjára ténykedni. Mindig keresek valamit ami meglep, és elragad. A dalaink mintázatából hallhatjátok, hogy van egy affinitásom Christopher Hitchens, Sagan és pár egyéb brilliáns elme felé.
Staf: Amikor az URSA-nak írok, a Night Verses, az Intronaut, és a The Ocean inspirál. Különösen elképeszt ahogy ezek a bandák a basszusgitárt támogató, és szólóhangszerként is használják a különböző témákban.
Niels: Staf felsorolásával értek egyet, de hozzátenném a Tesseractot. Ezek a bandák nagyon erős ritmusszekciókkal rendelkeznek. Akkor is elmennék megnézni őket, ha csak a basszos, meg a dobos lépne fel.
Luciano: azt mondhatom, legtöbbet a Skyharbor, a Contortionist, a Periphery és Jakub Zytecki inspirált. Sok egyebekkel ezen művészek olyan ízlésesen közelítik meg a szinkopatikus groove-okat, hogy ez sokat ad nekem az URSA dalainak írásakor.
Jan: Örülök, hogy Luciano említette a Contortionistet. Úgy gondolom egy részünk egyet ért abban, hogy az ő diszkográfiájuk az egyik fő inspiráció-forrásunk. Néhány közvetlenebb hatás az én oldalamról a Cult of Luna, Gojira, a Faceless és a Veil of Maya. Dalszöveg terén már másik zenekaromban is kísérleteztem a kozmikus képzelet témájával. Az URSA-val ezt egy sokkal magasabb szinten űzhetem.
Jan: I’m happy Luciano mentions the Contortionist. I believe several of us will agree that their entire discography is a major source of inspiration. Some more direct influences from my side include Cult of Luna, Gojira, the Faceless and Veil of Maya. In terms of lyrics I had already experimented with some cosmic imagery in my other band. But with URSA, this may be pursued to a much greater extent. Semmi esetre sem vagyok szakértője ebben a kérdésben. De szerencsére vannak olyan emberek, mint Carl Sagan, akik képesek ezt a témát érthetővé tenni egy olyan egyszerű halandó számára, mint én. Heil Sagan!

Hogy jött a név?
Sok nevet kipróbáltunk, de valami rövidet és erőset akartunk, így megegyeztünk az URSA-ról. Nincs különösebb jelentősége, csak túl akartunk jutni a névválasztáson, amilyen gyorsan csak lehet (haha).
Miután hosszú évekig instrumentális zenét játszottatok, mi miatt döntöttetek egy dedikált énekes alkalmazásáról?
Alex: Eredetileg én lettem volna a gitáros, és az énekes is, szóval mindig szerettünk volna vokálokat. Miután héthúrosokra váltottunk, a riffek keményebbé váltak, és úgy gondoltam, a hangom ehhez túl tiszta. Ez nehézzé tette a vokálok megírását, és nehéz volt olyan vokalistát keresni, aki erre a szerepre megfelelt. Így maradtunk instrumentális banda. Mivel akkoriban nagyon szerettük a Night Verses-t, talán ez is szerepet játszott ebben.
Korábban is dolgoztatok Jannal, vagy más énekessel?
Próbálkoztunk másokkal, de sosem állt össze a kép. Miután felvettük az első EP-t, egy utolsó próbára szántuk magunkat, hirdetések, posztok útján kerestünk, majd meghallgattuk Jan-t...igazából ő talált meg minket. Felismertem korábbi bandájából, a Sons of a Wanted Manből, és meghallgatása után nem volt mit mondani, egymásra néztünk és egyetértően bólintottunk. Azt hiszem, egyből a távozása után fel is hívtuk, a többi történelem. Olyan, mintha mindigis a banda tagja lett volna.

Mik az URSA tervei?
Épp most jött ki a Primordial Crown, ami az első, vokálokkal írt anyag. Egy videoklip is készült a dalhoz. Emellett új dalokat írunk, és év végére újabb fellépéseket tervezünk. Hogy áthidaljuk az űrt, ki fogjuk adni első EP-nker, vokálokkal. Ezeket a dalokat ma is játsszuk. Primordial Crown egy új kezdés volt mindnyájunknak, izgatottan várjuk, hogy bemutassuk mi van még a tarsolyunkban.
Mi lenne az álomkoncertetek?
Alex: Staf és én jártunk az Arctangent fesztiválra éveken át, rendkívül izgatott vonék, ha felléphetnénk ott.
Staf: Pontosan (haha)
Niels: Nekem ez nem ennyire specifikus, Arctangent, vagy az Euroblast mind a listámon vannak. De akár egy kisebb turné is az álmaim között van.
Luciano: Kifejezetten Euroblast
Jan: Nincs semmi specifikus álomfellépés. Belga zenekarként a Graspop lenne a legnagyobb hazai lehetőség. De ne ez legyen a végleges cél. Szeretem az egyedi helyszíneken rendezett, kicsi fesztiválokat. Pl. a Fire in the Mountains Fest egy nagy farmon Wyomingban, Prophecy Fest egy őskori barlangban Németországban, vagy a DunaJam, egy titkos partszakaszon Szardínián. Az ilyen relatíve privát fesztiváloknak van egy olyan bája, amit máshol nem találsz meg. Ha turnézhatnánk bármelyik fentemlített bandával, az is nagyszerű volna.

Hogy látjátok a műfaj. és az URSA jövőjét?
Szerintünk fényes. Csak Belgiumot nézve, láttuk a Psychonautot, a Hippotraktort, Cobra the Impalert és a Beart, akik sok más között hatalmasat mennek, és lenyűgöző ezt látni. Van egy olyna közönség, aki teljességgel mást akar látni, mint a járt ösvények, akik kihívást és a határok kitolását keresik a zenében, akik éheznek az erőteljes élő showra.
Az URSA most ír új dalokat az új felállással. Reméljük olyan zenét sikerül kreálni, amivel az emberek mélyen tudnak kapcsolódni, és reméljük ez a kapcsolódás a lehető legmesszebb, legszélesebb határokra mozdul, a fellépések során.

Primordial Crown has just been released and as I could see recently the band has gone through some significant changes but first of all, please introduce yourselves.
We are URSA, a 5-headed progressive metal band from Belgium. Niels is our drummer, Staf our bass player Luciano and i (Alex) play guitar and Jan is our vocalist.
How would you define Ursa’s music?
Alex: I’d define our music as dynamic progressive metal that takes the time to develop and paint soundscapes. We have very different musical tastes and influences, from modern and tight to more raw and natural and we try to create something that, hopefully, brings all of that together into something unique
For how long has the band been active and when was the new lineup set?
Alex: Staf, Niels, and I used to be in a band called Horses Blew Fire (HBF). I was the singer for that band, and I quit somewhere in 2018 to start my own endeavor. Staf quit HBF not long after and joined us. We went through a lot of names and even styles of music, starting out with the intent of doing something more in the style of Agent Fresco and The Intersphere. However, our drummer at that time, Jesse, brought more chaotic metal influences, so we became heavier and instrumental. Later, everything changed again when Luciano joined, and we started to slowly evolve into our current sound. Then our old drummer quit, and Niels joined us in 2021. That’s when everything really sped up, and we finished the majority of the songs we have released so far. In 2022, we started playing live shows. Finally, Jan joined us on vocals in 2024. You can hear his vocals on our recently released song 'Primordial Crown’, which marks a new start for us as a band.
Who/What are your main inspirations? (music, art, movies, persons…)
Alex: I get my inspiration from a lot of things, it always changes: From Karnivool, to Car Bomb, Spiritbox, to Tigran Hamasyan and even a lot of pop. I try to keep an open mind and am always willing to explore. I’m always looking for something to surprise me or draw me in. And from the samples used in our songs, you can probably tell i have an affinity for Christopher Hitchens, Sagan, and a few other brilliant minds.
Staf: While writing songs for URSA, I draw inspiration primarily from bands like Night Verses, Intronaut, and The Ocean. I especially admire how these bands succeed in using the bass both as a supportive instrument and as a standout feature in various sections.
Niels: I agree with Staf’s list, though I’d certainly also add Tesseract to it. These bands just have such strong rhytm sections. I’d go see them, even if it was just drum and bass alone.
Luciano: I’d say I’m quite inspired by acts like Skyharbor, The contortionist, Periphery and Jakub Zytecki. These artists among others that tastefully approach syncopated grooves are what speak to me the most when writing for URSA.
Jan: I’m happy Luciano mentions the Contortionist. I believe several of us will agree that their entire discography is a major source of inspiration. But with URSA, this may be pursued to a much greater extent. I am by no means an expert on this matter. But luckily for me, there are people like Carl Sagan who are able to make this subject comprehensible for a mere mortal like me. Hail Sagan!
How did the name come?
We went through multiple names, we ultimately decided we wanted something short and powerful and settled on URSA by vote. There’s not much of a meaning besides wanting to skip the excruciating search for a name as fast as possible (haha)
What led you to dedicate a main vocalist after being a rather instrumental band for years?
Alex: The original intent for the band was that i would be the singer and guitarist, so vocals were always intended. As we moved to 7 strings, the riffs got heavier and I found my voice to be too clean for the music, which made writing vocals challenging, as was finding a vocalist who fit the bill. Therefore we settled on being an instrumental band. That we were heavily into Night Verses at the time could also have played a role.
Have you been working together with Jan before/have you tried other vocalists?
We looked for and tried vocalists but it never clicked. After we finished recording the first EP, we decided to give it one last try, made some posts online, held some auditions and found Jan, or rather, he found us. We recognised him from his previous band (Sons of a Wanted Man) and after his audition, we didn’t even have to say anything, we looked at each other and nodded. I think we called him right after he left and the rest is history. It’s been as if he was always part of the band.
What are Ursa’s current plans?
We just dropped ’Primordial Crown’, which marks our first single with vocals, we have a video clip lined up for this song as well. Besides that we are writing new material and planning more shows for the end of the year. To bridge that gap we will be rereleasing our first EP with vocals like we perform them live nowadays. Primordial crown marks a new beginning for us and we are impatient to show what we have in store.
Do you have any dream gigs?
Alex: Staf and I have been going to Arctangent for years and we love that festival to death. I would be thrilled beyond belief to play Arctangent.
Staf: What he said (haha)
Niels: For me it’s less specific. Festivals like Arctangent and Euroblast are definitively on my list. But doing a tour, even a small one, is also something I dream about.
Luciano: Definitely Euroblast
Jan: I don’t really have a specific dream gig. As a Belgian metal band, Graspop Metal Meeting is probably the biggest thing we could do in our home country. But don’t let that be the end goal, on the contrary. I love those smaller festivals that take place in unique locations. For example: Fire in the Mountains Fest on a big ranch in Wyoming, Prophecy Fest in a prehistoric cave in Germany or even DunaJam on a secret beach in Sardinia. Such relatively private festivals have a specific charm that you won’t find anywhere else. If we could do a tour and play festivals like that with some of the bands we’ve listed as an inspiration.
How do you see Ursa’s and the genre’s future?
We think the genre’s future is bright. Just looking at Belgium, we’ve seen Psychonaut, Hippotraktor, Cobra the Impaler and Bear amongst others grow tremendously and we’re stoked to see it happen. There’s definitely an audience out there who want something a bit more off the beaten path, who are looking for challenging music that pushes the boundaries of what you typically hear and are hungry for powerful live shows.
As for URSA, we are now diving into the first writing from scratch with this lineup. We hope to create music that people can connect with deeply and we hope that connection can spread as far and wide as possible through our intense shows.
